The holidays are quickly approaching, and I wanted to add some holiday cheer to my small one-bedroom apartment. I don’t have very much space to work with and storage is extremely limited (mostly to containers under my bed if I’m being completely honest). Keeping that in mind I went on a bit of a mission to find space saving Christmas decor that wouldn’t overwhelm my small space and would be easy to store during the year. I kept everything very budget friendly, with the only item over $20 being the artificial tree.
Pencil Tree: The most space-consuming item of decor that I opted for was an artificial 4.5 foot artificial Christmas tree. Even this item can be easily dissembled for storage during the year (although I may opt to keep it in my parents’ storage area, sorry mom). Since my space is so small I ended up opting for a pencil tree which I added red mini ornaments to (a find for $10 on amazon).
Poinsettia: The first item of Christmas decor I picked up was this lovely pink Poinsettia plant. I am more used to seeing the traditional red colored flowers around Christmas time and since I picked this up in November, I was under the impression that the flowers would turn Red as the plant matured. After reading up more on Poinsettias, they come in all sorts of different colors. Often the pink ones cans become darker if the sunlight is limited. However, when given plenty of sunlight, indoor Poinsettia flowers can last past the normal 4-6 weeks, even well into spring, so that is my new goal with this beautiful plant. I picked this one up at Wegmans back in November for $10. I love the birch detailing on the pot, and I am very happy with this find.
A Pillowcase is so easy to change with the seasons and only takes up a minimal amount of storage space. A couch can often be the focal point of a small apartment so switching up the pillowcase with the changing seasons can be a fun and easy way to decorate.
Window Lights: One of my favorite finds for this Christmas was a set of snowflake window lights I found on amazon. This set of lights was under $15 on amazon. They are battery powered and come with a timer, which I love. There are also several different settings and the lights can move in different ways or just be still
Live Greens: The last item of decor that I decided to add to my apartment was a bouquet of greens. I knew I wanted to add some sort or greenery into my decor, but didn’t have the space for a live tree or a garland. This bouquet is the perfect space-saving way to incorporate greenery into Christmas decor. It smells so wonderful and can even be decorated with a festive bow for a more Christmasy touch. I put it in some water to be sure that it would stay fresh for as long as possible.
Another item of decor that is so easy to swap out with the seasons is a picture or print. I previously had a pumpkin print in this picture frame for the fall. I simply swapped it out for a more Christmas-themed print in December. Prints and pictures are such an easy an easy and space-saving way to add a festive touch to any space.
Items I decided against:
Any kind of figurines: This includes any kind of tabletop Christmas tree, any of those Christmas Villages, and any snow globes, even though I think they are very pretty. I think there are some really cute Christmas tree figurines and other sorts of things you can pick up at the supermarket or Hobby Lobby. I honestly just didn’t want to deal with them during the year.
–Christmas hand towels and dish towels: I had considered this one since dish and hand towels are easy way to add Christmas decor to the kitchen. Since I’d only be using them for a month (and would have to store them for the rest of the year) it just didn’t feel like it was worth it
–Christmas Wreath: I live in an apartment, so I didn’t think this one would be worth it for me. I might get one next year to put on the door to my apartment, but it would definitely have to be a live one. It isn’t something that I want to store during the year.
–Any kind of garland or artificial greenery aside from my tree: I like the way that a festive garland looks, but it would take up quite a bit of space to store.
